Step 2: Enter your assumptions on the input tabs

Subscription based E-commerce Sales forecast

  • The revenue model will help you forecast your monthly revenue and direct costs for five years. The model starts by using your number of website visitors and your conversion rate to estimate monthly sales units. You will set various product or product categories along with their associated cost, revenue, and shipping and packing expenses. The model then projects out your revenue and direct expenses for five years and automatically passes through updates to the financial statements. The revenue model also allows you to factor in revenue and cost from a subscription program.

E-commerce Subscription Model Overhead Costs

  • You will be guided to insert your other relevant expenses in the operating expense model, which includes some common line items and default amounts to help you get started. This model will pass through the expenses and cash flows on each of the financial statements for you. You can provide your monthly expenses as either fixed amounts or variable items that could differ each month like payment processing fees. The first three months of the model are broken out separately so that you can account for start-up expenses.

Subscription Based E-commerce General Financial Assumptions

  • The general assumptions template will guide you to provide balance sheet items such as fixed assets, loans, investments, inventory assumptions, and accounts receivable assumptions. The template will have you input some simple values and then it will calculate the more tedious things for you such as loan amortization, interest expense, depreciation expense, inventory purchases, and things like that.

E-commerce Salaries and Payroll Sheet

  • The salaries and payroll model helps calculate your monthly expenses for salaried employees, including items like employer taxes and benefits, but it also helps you plan for distributions (dividends, owner draws) made to owners.

Step 3: The model is automatically updated based on your assumptions

Subscription Based Ecommerce Snapshot

  • The At-A-Glace tab shows you a digestible financial snapshot in the form of several helpful graphs, charts, ratios, and financial summaries, all ready to be copied into other marketing slicks and pitch decks

E-commerce Financial Statement Tabs

  • There are six differentFinancial Statement tabs that cover your bases: the annual and monthly formats of the income statement, cash flow statement, and balance sheet, and the month-by-month breakdowns of the same financial statements.

Investor Dashboard Tab

  • The Investor Dashboard tab enables you and any necessary stakeholders to see the impacts of changing the main assumptions of the sales forecast model that may have trickle down effects. This tab presents the income statement from your model and a special, modified income statement that updates whenever you change the assumptions. This provides you the ability to see how sensitive your model is to certain variables without changing the data you already provided.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are examples of successful ecommerce + subscription businesses?

Dollar Shave Club is one of the most popular examples of a successful ecommerce subscription business.  There are also companies such as Birchbox, Pet Circle, and Manpacks, as well as, Amazon’s “Subscribe and Save” business.

What is the average churn rate for an ecommerce subscription business?

Recurly studied 900 ecommerce subscription businesses and found that the average churn rate was 7.02% and ranged between 3% and 12%.  As you complete your financial projections with our spreadsheet template, you will find what a huge impact churn rate has on your profitability as an ecommerce subscription business.  Since you are likely paying to acquire customers, each time you lose a customer (churn), you have to pay to acquire a new customer to replace them.

How to determine what shipping should cost for my ecommerce business?

Shipping costs can make or break your ecommerce business.  It can be difficult to estimate what the cost might be to ship your ecommerce items because the location, dimensions, and weight can all play a role in determining the shipping cost.  Additionally, as you grow your shipping volume you can negotiate better shipping rates with carriers such as UPS or FedEx.  Shopify and other ecommerce platforms provide useful calculators to help you predict the cost of shipping your specific items.

Is an ecommerce business a good business to start?

We studied revenue data from 234 tech startups and we found that ecommerce businesses and DTC Product businesses were the fasted to reach $1,000,000 in revenue; however, growth really slows for DTC companies in year 5 and beyond when compared to B2B SaaS, B2C Software and Marketplace businesses. So although an ecommerce business can be a good business to startup, you will likely have less upside when compared to other software based tech startups.
