Frequently Asked Questions

How large should a vet clinic be?

Vicki Pollard, AIA, CVT, principal at Animal Arts says that a typical vet clinic with one veterinarian should have 2 exam rooms of approximately 1,000 square feet each plus you will need to have a waiting area and some office space.  With that in mind, we estimate that the average vet clinic should be approximately 3,000 square feet.

How much does it cost to open a vet clinic?

Based on our research, the typical startup costs for a vet clinic with one veterinarian is between $500,000 and $900,000.  The startup costs can be broken into the following categories:

  • Vet Equipment and Furniture = $85,000
  • Vet clinic office = $390,000 - $750,000
  • Working capital reserve for a new vet practice = $66,000

If you can find an existing clinic to rent that doesn't need remodeling your startup costs can be dramatically reduced, but if you need to construct a new clinic you will likely be at the high end of the range.

How many animals can one veterinarian see?

According to DVM360 the average veterinarian can see 4,500 animals per year.  They come to this conclusion by assuming 5 working days per week, 50 weeks per year and between 15 and 20 appointments per working day.

How much can a vet practice owner make?

Based on our research we found that a vet practice with one veterinarian can make $550,000 in annual revenue on average.  Praxis reports that the average profit that a vet clinic owner can make is $280,000 per year.
